What is a Foster Family Agency?

As I mentioned in my post 11/19/15, there are two ways to be licensed as a foster parent in California, either through the county or through a Foster Family Agency.  What is a foster family agency? The Department of Social Services defines a Foster Family Agency as “any organization engaged in the recruiting, certifying, and training of, and providing professional support to, certified parent(s), or in finding homes for placement of children for temporary or permanent care who require that level of care as an alternative to a group home.”   I think of it this way, if you choose to go with an organization like a foster family agency they should provide support for the children placed in their homes and their licensed families.  Usually with foster family agencies you will be assigned a separate foster family worker that can come out as often as once a week to the family home.  The agencies can provide support groups, separate trainings and offices to allow the birth family to visit.  There are many foster family agencies in Los Angeles county, some have one office and some are large enough to have multiple offices. So if you live in the South Bay it probably be best not to pick an agency that only has offices in Sylmar, as that means you could be driving too much to get your classes and such.  If you have any questions ask around or do a search for the agencies in your area, most will take the time to answer your questions.  Please remember that there are many children in the foster care system that need homes, so if you choose to become a foster parent there are several options available to you.
